The Redlands Police Department will host a community meeting with Assistant Chief of Police Travis Martinez and Lt. Stephen Crane to provide information and seek public input on the proposed use of Automated License Plate Reader technology to enhance criminal investigations. The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the Ayres Hotel, 1015 W. Colton Ave.
Automated License Plate Reader systems use cameras, either in fixed locations or mounted on vehicles, such as police units or mobile trailers, to capture license plate numbers and store them in databases available to investigators. ALPR cameras can be deployed at strategic locations, such as primary routes in and out of the city or areas that are experiencing increased levels of crime that may involve a suspect vehicle.
Data captured by ALPR cameras may be used to generate leads or corroborate information from witnesses. ALPR systems can also alert investigators when a license plate number that has been entered into the National Vehicle Locator System is captured. The Data captured by the ALPR can be accessed only by authorized law enforcement agencies for criminal investigations.
The community meeting is open to the public and will also be Livestreamed through the Redlands Police Department Facebook page at www.facebook.com/RedlandsPoliceDepartment/. Questions may be submitted through Facebook and will be answered during the meeting as time allows. Some responses may be posted at a later time.
