SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Sept. 8, 2023 – The vehicle parking lot to the popular Humber Park trailhead site will not be accessible for two weeks due to a road closure and construction of a wall, starting Oct. 1. Riverside County will implement the closure to a section of Fern Valley Road adjacent to the parking lot near Idyllwild, Calif.

The closure is required for the safety of the public and contractors, who are improving the road leading to the lot and building a retaining wall adjacent to the parking area. The work is part of a larger road improvement project in Idyllwild the county began in August. Work has occurred daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Travel on Fern Valley Road will be restricted by the county; access to businesses and residences will be coordinated. Parking will not be permitted on Fern Valley Road during the work. Pedestrians and cyclists will be prohibited for the safety of the public and workers.

Humber Park is a popular recreation site located on the San Jacinto Ranger District of the San Bernardino National Forest, which provides access to the Devils Slide Trail 3E05 and Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail 3E07. Both trails enter the San Jacinto Wilderness area and will be open via the Ernie Maxwell Trailhead on Tahquitz View Drive

Additionally, hikers from the nearby Pacific Crest Trail are encouraged to use the Ernie Maxwell trail as a detour to reach Idyllwild during the work. For additional information, contact the forest’s San Jacinto Ranger Station at (909) 382-2921.
