Celebrating Juneteenth

Tomorrow, June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth as a community, as a city, and as a nation. This holiday recounts the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people in the state were finally freed by executive decree.

In 2021, President Joe Biden officially declared Juneteenth a national holiday, and our country now acknowledges and celebrates Juneteenth as an integral part of American history.

Juneteenth has been celebrated in the African-American community for generations with events, cookouts, and quality time with friends and family.

This past weekend, on June 15, we celebrated the holiday as a community here in Moreno Valley with our very own Juneteenth Festival.

The day was filled with amazing performances by Aurora Monroe School of Dance, New Foundation Church, NLAA Dare Dance Company, and a two-hour concert by The Groove Squad! There was also a domino tournament and a kids' electric car racetrack hosted by Kids Car Club LA.

It truly was a family-friendly celebration of freedom, culture, and community.

This Juneteenth, as we reflect on the resilience and courage of those who have fought for freedom and equality, let’s celebrate the progress we have made while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to achieve racial equality and justice for all.
