Mayor's Message Not Out of the Woods Yet

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

There has been a lot of mixed messaging lately about coronavirus, stay-at-home orders and whether the infection and death rates are declining.  As governors begin to discuss how and when to eventually go about gradually allowing for more commerce, we should not make the mistake of thinking that we’re out of the woods already.

As I write this week, California has just had its highest single-day death toll due to Covid-19.  And while there is cautious hope that, thanks to the stay-at-home order, we may avoid an overwhelming surge in hospitalizations, the numbers of infections, hospitalizations and deaths are still climbing, and the hospitalization surge is not yet ruled out.

What I especially appreciate about the governors of California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado is that as they work together toward an eventually less-restricted society, they are guided by scientific evidence and motivated by their commitment to save lives.  We should do the same.

I urge you not to be distracted by talk of miracle cures and to keep doing what science has proven is most effective:  physical distancing, regular hand-washing, and face-covering outside the home.  We are saving lives.  And as difficult as these restrictions are, especially economically, making it through to the other side of all this with all our loved ones is still what’s most important.
