Breakfast Fundraiser Hosted by Local Tiger Band

Bright and early on Saturday March 15, 2014, the Terrace View Middle School hosted a Pancake Fundraiser breakfast to raise money for more band instruments. Band Director Lysander McKown shared that the long term goal of the middle school and local elementary schools is to raise about $50,000 to purchase equipment and instruments for students at the middle school and several local elementary schools. The community turned out in full force as they enjoyed pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage while being treated to a concert from the students. “We have anywhere from 60 to 180 students performing this year,” said McKown, “and we need to be able to reach more students interested in playing an instrument.” Giavanna Valencia, a fifth grader in Grand Terrace, plays the saxophone in the band. “I picked the saxophone because I like jazz, and I was pretty impressed at how jazz musicians use the instrument,” she said. The Araiza family showed up in full force to support Raymond Araiza, a 5th grader, who plays the trumpet. Dad Richard, mom Jennifer and siblings Vincent, Jaxson and Raevyn were all enjoying their pancakes while waiting for the concert to start at 8:30 a.m. that morning. Jory Demers, a 7th grader in the Tiger Advanced Band was in the back of the cafeteria selling chocolates for the cause. “I’ve been playing since 4th grade, almost four years now,” he shared. Parent supporter Jiny Gomez and her son Nathaniel were greeting those who came to support the event. Gomez’s son John-Paul is a 5th grader who plays the saxophone in the band. As the band began to perform more people were showing up to have breakfast and support the cause. As McKown announced the band would begin by playing “the traditional first song you ever learn on an instrument- Hot Cross Buns” parents stopped eating and began to video the performance as others continued to file in to get their pancake breakfast.
