High School Students Celebrate Progress

By Moreno Valley Unified School District

09/05/2018 at 04:52 PM

The Moreno Valley College (MVC) Upward Bound Math and Science Program recognized about 80 students from Valley View and Vista del Lago High Schools following their completion of the program’s six-week summer experience. Upward Bound is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsored by MVC in partnership with Moreno Valley Unified School District.

The program focuses on helping potential first-generation college attendees develop skills in a variety of STEAM subjects, such as chemistry, ecology, biology, and physics. Students also work on concepts like problem solving and teamwork.

The program runs year-round, but Thursday’s celebration was the culmination of six weeks of work in the summer program. Over the course of the summer students participated in various workshops, unique field experiences, career connecting and classes. During the school year, about 120 students at each school participate in the program.

“It was inspiring to hear student stories of learning and their newfound knowledge,” said Board President Susan Smith. “We are proud of these accomplished students who are taking steps toward finishing high school and pursuing a successful postsecondary education.”

Board President Susan Smith, Board Vice President Jesús M. Holguín, Chief Academic Officer Maribel Mattox, Secondary Education Director Esperanza Arce, Valley View High School Principal Karen Johnson, Vista del Lago High School Principal Eric Swanson, and Vista del Lago Assistant Principal Kim Kruger attended the event.
