Moreno Valley Schools Bring Families Together for Workshops on Student Success and Bullying Prevention

A student's education involves much more than assignments, report cards and classroom instruction. The relationships children develop, the confidence they build and the support they receive at home can be equally important in shaping their school experience.

Moreno Valley Unified School District is continuing its parent education efforts with an October workshop focused on social-emotional learning, positive behavior and bullying prevention.

The district has scheduled a parent workshop titled "Supporting Students with SEL, PBIS, and Bullying Prevention" for Monday, October 19, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Health and Wellness Center, 23990 Eucalyptus Avenue. A Spanish-language workshop covering the same subjects is also listed for that morning.

The program addresses concerns that can affect students across grade levels, from elementary classrooms to high school campuses.

Social-emotional learning, commonly known as SEL, focuses on skills such as understanding emotions, building relationships, making responsible decisions and managing challenging situations.

These skills can help children navigate disagreements, respond to setbacks and communicate effectively with classmates and adults.

PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is an approach schools use to establish clear behavioral expectations, recognize positive conduct and provide additional support when students need it.

Together, these approaches can contribute to school environments where expectations are understandable and students have opportunities to develop constructive habits.

Bullying prevention adds another important dimension.

Bullying can affect a child's confidence, school attendance, relationships and sense of safety. Recognizing warning signs and knowing how to seek help can be especially important for families whose children may be reluctant to discuss difficulties at school.

Workshops provide an opportunity for parents to learn terminology used by educators, become familiar with available approaches and consider ways to reinforce positive behaviors at home.

They can also encourage communication between families and schools.

A parent who understands how a school approaches behavioral expectations may be better prepared to support those expectations outside the classroom. Likewise, educators benefit when families communicate concerns and help identify challenges that may not be visible during the school day.

The availability of English- and Spanish-language sessions is particularly valuable in a community with families from different linguistic backgrounds.

Language accessibility can help more parents participate in discussions about education rather than leaving them dependent on secondhand information.

The October 19 program follows other district efforts to engage families. Moreno Valley Unified's calendar includes parent informational meetings, workshops and school events designed to connect families with educational resources throughout the academic year.

These activities reflect the broader understanding that schools and households share responsibility for supporting children.

Teachers provide instruction and classroom guidance, while families reinforce learning, establish routines and help children develop healthy relationships.

Neither can fully replace the other.

The upcoming workshop also offers a timely opportunity for parents to consider how school climate influences academic achievement.

Students who feel supported and connected to their school communities may be better positioned to participate in class, seek assistance and remain engaged in learning.

The district's published calendar confirms the workshop topics, date and location. Specific speakers and detailed presentation materials have not been established from the calendar listing.

For Moreno Valley families, the October 19 session represents another opportunity to become active partners in their children's education.

The benefits of that partnership may extend far beyond one school year. When families and educators work together to help children develop confidence, empathy and responsibility, they are also helping prepare the next generation to contribute positively to the community.

Event details: Monday, October 19, 2026, 9–10 a.m., Health and Wellness Center, 23990 Eucalyptus Avenue, Moreno Valley.
