More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to turn out June 19 for the 12th Annual Community Day of Service, sponsored by the City of Redlands, the Redlands Service Club Council and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but there’s still need for more volunteers. This year volunteers will be working on community projects in five areas of the City, including State Street, Brookside Avenue, Ford Park, Kimberly Crest and the Redlands Sports Park.

The Volunteer Day of Service has become an annual event and grows more successful each year. Planning takes nearly a year with the City and the Redlands Service Club Council in partnership with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Volunteers will beautify the median along Brookside Avenue between Buena Vista and Center streets, the planters along State Street between Orange and Seventh streets and at Ed Hales Park, and the grounds of Kimberly Crest. At the Redlands Sports Park, volunteers will paint fences surrounding the park. At Ford Park, volunteers will work to stabilize the banks of the park’s upper pond while also re-establishing a hardscaped pad perimeter for visitors.

Sack lunches for all volunteers will be provided by the Kiwanis Club of Redlands.

The Redlands Service Club Council was formed in 2008 to offer assistance to the City through cooperative work projects and capital improvements. Working with the City’s Facilities and Community Services Department, the Service Club Council made renovation of Sylvan Park its first major project for 2009. Since then the Service Club Council and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have taken on increasingly ambitious projects at Israel Beal Park, Prospect Park, the Redlands Bowl, landscaping the Redlands Boulevard median and creating an entire park in a day at Heritage Park.

Individuals, families, community groups, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to participate in the workday. For information or to sign up, visit www.serveredlands.org.
