Toastmasters International, a renowned organization dedicated to improving public speaking and leadership skills, is commemorating its centenary this year. Founded in 1924 by John Smith in Santa Ana, CA, at the YMCA, Toastmasters has evolved into a global phenomenon with clubs, areas, and districts spanning across continents.

In a recent interview, members from Grand Terrace, California, shed light on the organization's history, its upcoming International Convention in Anaheim, and the transformative impact it has had on individuals and communities.

The district, encompassing regions from Riverside County to San Bernardino, reflects the expansive reach of Toastmasters. As one member noted, the upcoming International Convention in Anaheim will attract participants from around the world, converging to honor Toastmasters' rich heritage and legacy of empowering speakers.

Scheduled from August 14th to the 17th at the Anaheim Convention Center, the event promises to be a grand affair, featuring international speech contests, exhibits, and networking opportunities. It serves as a testament to Toastmasters' enduring commitment to fostering communication and leadership skills globally.

Reflecting on the local impact, members highlighted individuals like Tony Petta, 1st Mayor of Grand Terrace; Darcy Mc Naboe, past Mayor; Herman Hilkey, past Mayor Pro Tem. , who have contributed significantly to the Grand Terrace club's success. They emphasized the club's welcoming atmosphere, which has encouraged new members to overcome their fear of public speaking and find their voice in a supportive environment.

Indeed, public speaking can be daunting for many, but Toastmasters provides a structured platform for individuals to hone their skills through prepared speeches, impromptu talks, and constructive evaluations. The organization's Pathways program offers a customizable learning experience, guiding participants through various speech formats and recognizing their achievements along the way.

In an increasingly digital age, Toastmasters has adapted to hybrid meeting formats, allowing members to participate both in-person and online. This flexibility has enabled individuals to engage with the club's activities regardless of their location or schedule, further enhancing accessibility and inclusivity.

Looking ahead, the Grand Terrace club is gearing up for its International Speech Contest, where members will showcase their speaking prowess. Scheduled for February 23rd at 7:00 AM at the Azure Hills Church, the event promises riveting speeches and friendly competition, epitomizing Toastmasters' spirit of continuous improvement and excellence.

As Toastmasters celebrates its centenary milestone, it remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals to become confident communicators and leaders, leaving an indelible mark on generations to come.
