The University of Redlands will kick off its 2013–2014 Banta Center for Business, Ethics and Society Speaker Series on Oct. 8, featuring Chad Norton ’83, vice president of the Fund Business Management Group of Capital Research and Management Company. Norton will speak about corporate governance in the United States. In his talk, “Who’s Winning the War on Corporate Governance (and should you care)?” Norton will touch on analyzing corporate governance in the United States, whether or not corporate boards are in control, the rise of shareholder empowerment and the role of activist investors today. Norton co-manages Capital’s proxy voting efforts and works extensively with investment analysts and portfolio counselors on broad-based and company-specific corporate governance, compensation, social and environmental issues. He previously served as corporate secretary of The New Economy Fund and SMALLCAP World Fund, Inc., two of Capital’s retail mutual funds, as well as American Funds Insurance Series, which serves as the underlying investment vehicle for various annuity contracts. Norton earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Redlands and a MBA from Pepperdine University’s George L. Graziadio School of Business. Norton is a member of the Council of Institutional Investors, The Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals, and the National Society of Compliance Professionals. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 6 p.m. The University of Redlands Casa Loma Room is located at 1200 East Colton Ave. in Redlands. All events are free and open to the public. R.S.V.P. to vanessa_siliezar@redlands.edu by Oct. 3.
