Highland, Calif., (September 24, 2018) – Constantly looking for ways to maximize District operations and use resources efficiently, East Valley Water District installed a hydroelectric generation system that will convert energy from moving water into renewable electricity to help operate Plant 134, its Surface Water Treatment Facility. To commemorate the system’s official inauguration, the District held a ribbon cutting ceremony where participants learned more about the hydroelectric system, how it works and benefits for operating the Plant. Southern California Edison (SCE) took this opportunity to present the District with a $231,650 grant award for its efforts in supporting distributed energy resources through the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP).
“As a District we are always looking for opportunities to use resources efficiently,” said Board Chairman Chris Carrillo. “Through our partnership with San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, electricity produced by the hydroelectric generation system will help offset some of the costs of operating the Plant.”
Using a process called “Conduit Hydroelectricity”, the hydroelectric generation system routes high-pressure water delivered by State Project Water to Plant 134 through two turbines. As water passes through the turbines, the system’s induction generators spin to create an electrical current. This same action helps decrease water pressure to allow for treatment and delivery to EVWD customers.
The hydroelectric generator system is estimated to produce approximately 1 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy annually. Excess renewable energy created that is not used for Plant operation will be sent to SCE’s electrical grid. The District will then be eligible to receive a credit for the full retail value of the electricity provided to SCE.
“Plant 134 has the capability of treating up to 8 million gallons of water per day, and this facility will use the power of water to maximize the benefit of this infrastructure investment,” said John Mura, General Manager/CEO.
This $2.77 million project was funded through a loan from San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District.
