Specialized Bike Patrols Focused on Downtown

Redlands Police officers are taking to the streets on two wheels as part of an expanded bicycle patrol to address specific downtown enforcement issues. The RPD bicycle patrol recently expanded, with additional officers trained and increased patrols. Officers, usually in pairs, patrol the downtown area on mountain bikes in day and evening shifts “The patrol allows officers to get off their bikes and build relationships with people and businesses,” said Sgt. Ken Wright, who supervises the unit. Among its duties, the unit proactively addresses downtown issues, such as loitering and public drinking. Having officers on bicycles allows for additional enforcement in ways a traditional patrol car can’t provide. “With a patrol car, they see you coming,” Wright said, adding that bicycles are quieter and more versatile in certain situations. That versatility is part of the training to become certified as a bicycle officer, developing riding skills specific to law enforcement needs. The certification course involves up to 40 hours of physical training, health and nutrition information and tactical skills, such as riding up and down stairs, cone patterns and crowd control. Periodic eight-hour refresher courses are also part of the certification. Chief of Police Mark A. Garcia noted the patrols help to maintain Redlands historic downtown as a desirable destination for residents and visitors. “The Redlands Police Department is committed to working with all members of the community to find the best solutions to enhance the safety of our City,” Garcia said. “Having officers on bicycles provides not only a visible presence in the downtown, but it also gives those officers a unique perspective on the specific issues in that area.” The bicycle patrols supplement regular patrols and are focused primarily in an area between Pearl Avenue on the north and Olive Avenue on the south; Eureka Street on the west and Sixth Street on the east.
