Mark Takano, who represents California’s 41st congressional district which includes Moreno Valley, stopped for a visit at Midland Elementary School on Tuesday to see the school’s GEMS club.

The GEMS club stands for, Girls in Engineering, Math and Science. The club meets twice per week with the school’s Professional Development Specialist Rebecca Buckoff. The group uses innovative STEAM activities to develop an interest for girls in math, science and engineering. They demonstrated coding, circuitry, 3D printing, and more for the congressman.

Mr. Takano commented that he was impressed with the level of engagement from the students, he also took time to talk with the group of girls and encouraged them to not give up on their dreams of pursuing careers that have a traditionally high percentage of male employees.

The group presented the congressman with a 3D printed diamond, the symbol of the GEMS group, to take with him.

Board President Jesus Holguin, Vice President Cleveland Johnson, Clerk Dr. Marsha Locke, and Member Susan Smith were on hand for the visit along with Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora.

“This was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate how we provide a 21st-century education to our students,” said Board Member Susan Smith, “Mr. Takano’s visit to Midland Elementary School is a proud moment for our district and the community should be very happy that their schools are being recognized for being leaders in preparing students for future careers.”
