Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown (D-San Bernardino) recently hosted a visit by State Superintendent Tom Torlakson to announce that Arroyo Valley High School (AVHS) in San Bernardino was selected as one of nine California schools to pilot a pre-apprenticeship project that prepares students to work in the construction trades. The MC3 program, which stands for Multi-Craft Core Curriculum, is part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District’s (SBCUSD) efforts to ensure that all students are college-prepared and workforce-ready by graduation. “I’m so glad that State Superintendent Tom Torlakson was able to join me in recognizing AVHS for this impressive achievement,” said Assemblymember Brown. “The MC3 program will provide a unique opportunity for students to acquire new skills and broaden their knowledge base. I wish my husband Hardy could have been here because he fought so hard as a member of the San Bernardino School Board to establish AVHS on the west side of San Bernardino.” During last week’s meeting, Superintendent Torlakson declared that he was fully committed to doing all that he could to ensure that students in California have the tools they need to succeed in life, whether they attend a traditional four-year university or vocational school. Superintendent Torlakson also spoke directly to local school district leaders including San Bernardino County Superintendent Ted Alejandre, SBCUSD Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden, SBCUSD Board President Mike Gallo, SBCUSD Board Member Dr. Barbara Flores, the Honorable Wilmer Amina Carter (ret.), San Bernardino County Board Members Hardy Brown II and Allen Ritchie, as well as San Bernardino Community College District Trustee, Joseph Williams. Following a brief program, Assemblymember Brown, Superintendent Torlakson and others toured various Linked Learning and Career Technical Education classrooms to observe teachers and their students.
