February 2019 promises another banner year for budding scientists and engineers at MVUSD’s Annual Science and Engineering Fair, Friday, February 8, 2019 at 4:30pm (Activities) and 5:30om (Awards) at Bridges Learning Center on the corner of Cactus and Indian.

On Thursday, February 7th, over two hundred student projects will be dropped off at Bridges Learning Center after earning the honor at their site to move on to the district level competition. Judges from within the district and community will gather Thursday evening to judge over 200 elementary, middle and high school student projects.

On Friday, February 8th, students will attend an hour of fun scientific activities including an interactive STEAM Bus at 4:30pm. The awards ceremony will begin at 5:30pm to announce the winners and recognize those projects that will go on to the county competition.

Dr. Sue Buster, Director of Professional Development and Digital Learning shared, “Last year was our biggest turnout for student participation in entering projects as well as attending the Awards Ceremony. This year promises to be even bigger! MVUSD students are fierce competition at the county and state level. We shouldn't be prouder of them and the teachers who coach them!”

Professional Development Specialist Stacey Lerma heads up a committee of colleagues who have supported the process and will be on hand both Thursday and Friday to help set up and provide fun STEAM related activities to families---Dr. Amna Ahmad, Brian Bates, Kathryn Bayne, Jill Dayton, Terri Labik, Carissa Marin, Marlies Nelson, Toni Saldana and Matthew Story.

“Our goal is to encourage and empower our students to become 21st century innovators using scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills. MVUSD’s Annual Science and Engineering Fair does just that! We are proud of every participant, teacher, parent and administrator who support our vision!” says Lerma.

“We look forward to recognizing our outstanding student scientists on Friday,” said Board Clerk Dr. Marsha Locke, “It is exciting to hear that we have so many students participating in this educational experience.”

Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora has made it a district expectation that all schools will participate in the science fair to support Next Generation Science Standards.
