Under the direction of Coach Paige Borninkhof, SOAR Charter Academy cheerleaders have been training for this season’s cheer competitions.

On October 28, 2017, at the first competition for the season, the elementary cheer squad performed in the Cheer for a Cure competition at Grace Yokley Middle School in Ontario. The girls cheered in honor of a cure for breast cancer.

SOAR’s elementary cheer squad, which is made up of 19 students in grades 3rd through 5th, took 1st place in their division and the overall showmanship award. Several students also competed in a variety of individual competitions such as tumbling, toe touches, and stunt groups.

Fifth grader Addison Rusk took 1st place in the tumbling competition by performing a round-off and three back handsprings, and fifth grader Ryleigh Fort took 3rd place in the same category by landing her first ever successful aerial.

Fifth Grader Naomi Vazsquez took 2nd place with her toe touches.

Two SOAR student groups participated in the stunt down competition. A group of fifth graders, Alissa Lopez, Ryleigh Fort, Chloe Peterson, Naomi Vazquez, and Mikayla Ledbetter took home the trophy for second place with their high-flying stunts. A mixed grade group with fourth graders Jaelyn Razo and Sumayah Jackson, along with fifth graders Lizzie Parker, Addison Rusk, and Carley Sechrist took home the third-place trophy.

Cheerleading teaches hard work and it just doesn’t show overnight. Any average cheerleader can spend years working and developing skills, depending on how dedicated they are or which team they dream of being a part of. We all know that with hard work come rewards, and there are tons of rewarding goals that come with being in this sport.
