Mayor's Weekly Message: Staying Safe During Fire Season

By Ulises Cabrera , Mayor of Moreno Valley

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

Last weekend, we got our first look at what could be a substantial fire season in Riverside County.

Three large wildfires scorched the area around our City, with the Reche Fire coming uncomfortably close to hillside homes.

Fortunately, our County fire crews ensured these fires were away from our neighborhoods. I am eternally thankful to our brave men and women of CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, who worked long hours throughout the weekend in triple-digit temperatures to keep our communities safe.

This fire season, staying safe and prepared is more important than ever. I suggest reading CAL FIRE’s Ready, Set, Go Wildfire Action Plan, an excellent resource for wildfire preparedness.

Here are some quick tips from CAL FIRE on how to stay safe:

  • Retrofit your home with fire-resistant materials.
  • Create a buffer zone between your home and nearby brush.
  •  Create an emergency preparedness kit and a family communication plan.
  • Be ready to evacuate when necessary.
  • When the air gets smoky, be sure to limit strenuous activity and stay inside your home as much as possible.

And, of course, sign up for our Alert MoVal emergency notification system to receive up-to-the-minute emergency alerts directly to your phone or email. You can also sign up for Alert RivCo to get notified of emergencies throughout Riverside County.

Stay safe, MoVal!
