Why is Cert Needed?

Last week, we introduced CERT, the Community Emergency Response Team.  Why would we need such a program?

We live in earthquake country and are constantly reminded that the BIG ONE can happen any time.  But other life-threatening emergencies can happen, too, such as floods, fires or a freight train derailment.  Unfortunately, first responders may not be immediately available or may be delayed as access roads might be impassable due to landslides or cracks in the roads.  So, we need to be prepared to fend for ourselves for the first few days after a disaster.

The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Members will learn how to prepare for emergencies, what supplies one should have ready in the house, how much food, how much water, but most importantly, how to protect their family in an emergency!  With this training, CERT volunteers can also assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

The fantastic thing about CERT training is that it is provided FREE of charge.  Your contribution will be in the form of a few hours of your time, an investment well worth the safety of yourself and your loved ones.   Please stay tuned as in the coming weeks we will elaborate on details about the training and where to sign up. Alternatively, if you want to get on the list early, you may contact Assistant Planner Haide Aguirre at haguirre@grandterrace-ca.gov or (909) 824-6621, ext. 247.
