The staff and students of Dr. Mildred D. Henry Elementary School invited the community to its grand opening in late October. Henry Elementary, which has been open since the beginning of the school year in August, is one of four new elementary schools in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. The school is located on 13.9 acres at 1250 W. 14th Street, next to Roosevelt Elementary School. Students attend Roosevelt Elementary from kindergarten through third grade and Henry Elementary from fourth through sixth grade. Under the leadership of principal Dr. Marcus Funchess, over 550 students attend the 44,463 square foot, 24 classroom school, which boasts amenities including a computer lab, designated student drop-off lanes, a library and media center, a multi-purpose room and teaching walls. The school was constructed using district and state matching funds, as well as funds provided by the State High Performance Incentive and Southern California Edison Savings by Design grants. During the grand opening ceremony, the San Bernardino School Employees Federal Credit Union (SBSEFCU) adopted Henry Elementary School. SBSEFCU will support the school during career day and family involvement activities, as well as provide needed supplies. The Adopt-A-School program partners schools with local business and community organizations. The program is a partnership of the District and the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce.
