Latin American-folk-jazz-fusion band Huayucaltia took the stage at the Redlands bowl to entertain a crowd of hundreds. The performance took place at 8:15 p.m. on Aug. 6 in the Bowl where families with their children and people of all ages enjoyed themselves. The event was free for all to attend. As families gathered at the bowl with snacks and fold-up chairs, the event immediately gave off a community and family feel. Carol Dixon stated, “It is all about community spirit and bringing people together in a wonderful summer entertainment kind of concert setting to give a sense of community.” As hundreds of people filled the Redlands Bowl they were attracted by the uniqueness of the event. Randi Taub stated, “It’s something that people aren’t exposed to, like the classical music, things you don’t see mainstream anymore.” The Latin American-jazz-folk-fusion band Huayucaltia (the band’s name means kinship and unity in Nahuatl) gave off an exotic and unique feel and captivated the audience with smooth music as they were illuminated with a blue light at the center of the stage. Band members included Cindy Harding, Ciro Hurtado, Julio Ledezma, and Antonio Ezkauriatza. Before the event stared many people waited anxiously for the show to start. The Redlands Bowl is rich in history, with its past performances also being remarkable. The Huayucaltia performance had big shoes to fill, as people recalled amazing past performances. “This is the second event I’ve been to. I really enjoyed the last event that I went to. For me this is the best free thing you can go to in the area.” Recalling past events Taub stated, “I really liked the ‘Sound of Music.’ It was one of the best things that they had in years.” The Redlands Bowl is known for serving a community with a wide array of interests. Every week they change the performances, catering to a wide audience. Dixon stated, “It’s a variety. They try to touch on everything. It’s nothing modern. Last week we had ‘The Sound of Music,’ there’s ballet, there’s opera—once there was a Frank Sinatra impersonator.”
