Hydration is Key to Surviving Summer

Everyone should be enjoy their summer freely. But what about surviving the scorching heat? Those triple digit temperatures, sizzling concretes, beaming sun-ray, and heatwaves are coming our way.

Summer in California is known to have the hottest temperatures of the year and that causes a great number of problems. One of the most notable problems is suffering from dehydration. During the summer people usually like to partake in many outside activities, so hydrating should be everyone’s priority.

Hydration is a key factor in maintaining a healthy you! So keeping you and your loved ones hydrated and refreshed is imperative for having a good and safe summer. 

The most vital rule to staying hydrated is always to drink water. Our bodies are comprised of about 60% water, so it is essential we replenish it. People like to stay active during the summer and it is paramount they take the proper precautions. It is recommended that people drink at least a gallon of water each day depending on your body and activity level. Before you do an activity, you should drink water and regularly have a source of water with you. In the summer people are more relaxed and start to drink more soda and alcohol during social events. The cool sensation feels good, but it is not a healthy alternative and increases dehydration. 

To stay active, it is important that we take in electrolytes as well. Electrolytes are minerals in the blood that regulate bodily systems. We lose electrolytes such as potassium and sodium when we sweat. Since the summer heat is bound to make us sweat, we must find ways to replenish our electrolytes. This can be achieved by eating a banana or drinking a healthy sports drink. However, we must not confuse sports drinks with energy drinks. Another common way to keep hydrated is eating food that contains water. This includes berries, grapes, and vegetables. Any intake of water is helpful.

Sometimes people are unaware they are dehydrated and ignore the signs. Our bodies can overheat from exposure in the sun, and if we are not drinking plenty of water, our bodies can suffer. It is reported that children and people over 60 years old are susceptible to dehydration. Families should try to implement more water than any other drink.

Know the symptoms of dehydration:

 - Increased thirst

 - Dry mouth

 - Tired or sleepy

 - Decreased urine output

 - Urine is low volume and more yellowish than normal

 - Headache

 - Dry skin

 - Dizziness

 - Few or no tears

Our brains also contain water, and if we do not drink enough, we can start to feel dizzy and that can cause people to pass out. Another symptom is when sweating stops. If not cared for properly or addressed right away, these symptoms can lead to heatstroke and heat exhaustion; two very severe heat injuries. The two most notable symptoms are thirst and dry mouth, so consuming fluids is essential. Soda can keep you hydrated for a couple of minutes, but you should not rely on it as it will not quench your thirst and can make you feel thirstier. 

Summer is filled with parties and outings where everyone just wants to relax and open up a nice cold drink. It is expected that people consume their drink of preference, but it causes people to not recognize signs of dehydration. It is critical that we guide families into drinking more water in their heated vacations.

California’s climate can be quite arid year-round, so people should never slack on hydrating. Our bodies are temples, and we must keep it healthy and take car of it in order to survive. Know the signs, take care of your bodies, stay safe, and most importantly, keep hydrated this summer.
