Roosevelt, Vermont and Riley Elementary Schools recently presented the Outstanding Student, Parent, and Employee Awards in earlier this year. Each of the honorees contributes to the District’s goals of maintaining safe, respectful, and welcoming environments and high expectations for student and staff performance. The following are the award recipients from Riley Elementary School, located at 1554 N. Garner Ave. in San Bernardino, under Principal Martha Servin: Kevin Aday is a gifted student and an Outstanding Student Award winner. He skipped a grade to enter Sarah Emerson’s third-grade GATE class. Despite being a year younger than his classmates, Kevin was at the top of the class. He is curious and motivated to learn. He loves to read and is interested in science. Kevin wants to graduate from college with a degree in mechanical engineering or medicine. Outstanding Student Martha Canela is a role model for her classmates. She is considerate, respectful, and well mannered. Martha is also a disciplined student, taking responsibility for her own learning. She has made progress in her English-language development, advancing from an Intermediate to an Early Advanced level. Martha is considering a career as a music teacher or a news reporter. Osvaldo Rodarte is an advanced reader and an Outstanding Student Award winner. He reads at a sixth-grade level even though he only recently completed fourth grade. He can usually be found reading a book from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, when he isn’t doing class work or playing chess. Osvaldo dreams of attending Harvard, becoming a pediatrician, and working at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Outstanding Parent Award winner Fanny Nieto is a welcome and frequent visitor to Roosevelt Elementary School. She volunteers countless hours at the school, making her a valued member of the community and a role model for other parents. Nieto’s children, Yuliana and Andrea, can be proud of her accomplishments. Fourth-grade teacher Gilbert Rodriguez is an Outstanding Certificated Employee. He holds high expectations for all students, helping them become independent, lifelong learners. Rodriguez also holds high expectations for himself. He attends professional development and training sessions to make sure he is up-to-date on the latest teaching strategies so his students receive the best education possible. Materials Clerk Daphne Card is Roosevelt’s Outstanding Classified Employee. She is a conscientious employee who goes out of her way to make a positive difference at the school. Card is always willing to improve her skills and challenge herself by taking on new projects. In addition to her regular job duties, Card has helped with the school carnival and Back-to-School Night, and she has chaperoned Saturday fieldtrips for CAPS (Creative Before- and After-school Programs for Success). Roosevelt Elementary School was one of three San Bernardino elementary schools to have these awards bestowed upon it. In the July 25 edition of the San Bernardino City News, the awardees from Riley Elementary School were announced.
