Interactive Citizens’ Academy Now Offered

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is now offering a free, 9-week, interactive Citizens’ Academy. The Citizens' Academy will provide an inside look at the function of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Participants will receive a comprehensive tutorial and inside look at their Sheriff’s Department designed to provide participants with an understanding of the operations and resources of the Sheriff’s Department.  Participants will interact with police executives and veteran officers during the academy.  The goal of the Academy is to provide a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s role in your community.  

The Citizens' Academy is offered at no cost. Applicants must pass a background check and commit to a 9-week curriculum offered one evening each week.

The Citizens’ Academy will begin on Monday, September 24, 2018, at the Palm Desert Station, located at 73705 Gerald Ford Drive, Palm Desert, CA 92211, every Monday through November 26, 2018, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.   One exception will be November 12, 2018, which is Veterans’ Day.  All sessions are in a classroom setting and do not require any physical training.  Applications for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Citizens’ Academy are currently being accepted. Space is limited. Only 50 participants will be selected from the applications we receive.  Deadline for registration is Friday, September 14, 2018.  Applicants must be 18 years old or older, and live or work in Riverside County. This academy is NOT the Basic Peace Officer Academy.

Citizen’s Academy Course Curriculum Information includes:

Sheriff’s Department Overview, Personnel Division, Sworn and Non-Sworn Academies, Field Training Officer Program, Patrol Operations, Corrections Operations, Court Services, Professional Standards Bureau, Force Options, Special Teams (Aviation, SWAT, Bomb Squad, K-9), Forensics Services Bureau, Dispatch Communications, and Volunteer Programs (Chaplain Corp., Citizens on Patrol, Posse, Search and Rescue).

Outside Events:

Jail Tour, Coroner's Office Tour, and Dispatch Tour.
