Watchful neighbors helped police arrest two residential burglars as they were leaving a home with stolen merchandise Monday morning.
Police received multiple reports of two young males knocking on doors and peering in windows in the 1200 block of Fern Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, May 5. When the first responding officer arrived in the neighborhood he saw the suspects climbing over a fence from a back yard.
When the suspects saw the officer they ran. After a short foot pursuit through the neighborhood, officers apprehended both suspects and recovered two backpacks full of stolen merchandise they had dropped as the pursuit began.
Police later confirmed the two had forced entry into a home through a doggy door. Both suspects, 17-year-old males, were arrested for burglary.
Police encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or individuals in their neighborhoods, including anyone seen knocking on doors, peering into homes, vehicles or yards or sitting in parked vehicles. Often simple contact by officers may prevent a crime or help police later identify potential suspects when a crime is reported.
