Read Across America and Principal for a Day

Local students and educators recently opened their doors to a variety of special guests from around the community to participate in Read Across America and Principal for a Day. Read Across America is an annual event held in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Volunteers from various sectors of business, government, entertainment and philanthropy read a Dr. Seuss book to classes throughout the Val Verde Unified School District (VVUSD). Board of Education members, business partners, and volunteers worked together to help make this event a huge success; one star guest was Grammy Award winning artist Lupillo Rivera who read to students at Columbia Elementary School. Principals around the District surrendered their responsibilities to a special guest for the better part of the morning. Several community leaders and business members had the privilege of experiencing what it was like to be a public school principal for the day. After what was certainly a busy morning on the job, Principals for a Day were invited back to the District office for a small luncheon to thank them for their time and interest in the program. Mr. Juan M. Lopez, Val Verde Superintendent, said, “Our business partners are so important to the education process. Val Verde Unified is striving to produce students who are ready to be contributing members of our community. Involving the local business leaders is a fantastic way to hear what we can do in the education sector to help produce career ready graduates.”
