MORENO VALLEY>> The results of local elections are in as Incumbent Moreno Valley Mayor Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez won re-election against seven other Moreno Valley candidates. After weeks of campaigning, Gutierrez won 32.48 percent of the vote with Dr. Denise Fleming, an educator and veteran, coming in second place with 17.85 percent of the vote. For the first time, residents had the opportunity to vote for a mayor rather than the city council electing the mayor like in previous years. Gutierrez will continue serving the city of Moreno Valley and he is excited and ready to continue to work for Moreno Valley residents. "I’m excited that voters chose the side of progress and believe in my commitment to putting Moreno Valley on the map in the next two years," Gutierrez said. When he heard the results of his victory, he said there was a lot of excitement from his parents, family and volunteers. "We were all relieved when we received the news because we all worked extremely hard communicating our message to voters," he said. As the first ever directly elected Mayor, I will work to unify our city and ensure that we make Moreno Valley work for our residents by focusing on bringing local jobs, establishing a new library and increasing fire and police protection." Gutierrez said he would like to thank the voters who voted for him, but said he will serve as the mayor for everyone. "I would like to encourage residents to contact my office at 951.413.3008, see me during my open office hours on Fridays and/or participate actively in their local government. There are many opportunities to participate including attending a city council meeting, applying for a board or commission or volunteering with a specific department or project. Gutierrez said he feels Moreno Valley is a great city with a lot of potential. "My commitment will be to put our city on the map with our Momentum MoVal strategic plan," Gutierrez said. "Our goal as a city should be to stay united and move forward."
