Moreno Valley College's (MVC) Upward Bound Math and Science Program recently co-hosted the University of California(UC) College Information Night at Vista Del Lago High School. Over 250 people attended from Moreno Valley Unified, Val Verde Unified, and other local districts to learn about freshman admission to the University of California and transfer paths to UC from community colleges. The event featured a workshop by representatives from UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and Moreno Valley College who provided insights to attendees about how to prepare for college early, unique programs and majors at each school, what classes to take to meet UC eligibility, transfer pathways to UC, how applications are reviewed, and funding options to help cover college costs. Following the information session, there was an educational fair in the A-Wing Corridor where families got to speak directly with college representatives. According to a UC press release issued on January 17th of this year, by the Chancellor's Office, nearly 150,000 freshmen applicants were received by the UC system last year. "Competition to earn a UC seat is fierce," said Micki Poole Clowney, director of Moreno Valley College's Upward Bound Math and Science program. "These types of programs help increase student access to the educational pipeline," Poole Clowney said. "We're hoping this community effort will help students and families navigate into the college of their choice." The event was co-sponsored by MVC in cooperation with Vista Del Lago High School Parent Engagement Leadership Initiative Action Team for Partnerships, Moreno Valley Unified School District, the African-American Advisory Council, and the University of California - Riverside Early Academic Outreach Program. The goal of the Moreno Valley College Upward Bound Math & Science Program program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post-secondary degrees, and ultimately careers, in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
