The San Bernardino County Board of Education voted 3-1 to appoint Michael Gallo to fill the vacancy in Trustee Area D at its special meeting held September 20.

Gallo, a former school board member of nine years for San Bernardino City Unified, is the president and chief executive officer for Kelly Space and Technology, Inc., in San Bernardino. He is a founding board member of the Alliance for Education with an extensive background in workforce development through many organizations.

In 2008, Gallo wrote California’s first collaborative action plan for STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math).

Gallo said he was honored to be selected for the board vacancy from such a high caliber group of candidates who applied.

An advocate for project-based learning, Gallo said, “A priority of mine is to see how we can provide opportunities for all of our students to learn through different modalities and different approaches.”

He also expressed his eagerness to work in partnership with the full board in service to the students of San Bernardino County.

The County Board had 11 applicants vie for the vacancy in Trustee Area D, representing the school districts of Rialto Unified, San Bernardino City Unified and Snowline Joint Unified.

Board members admitted that the selection process was more difficult than they thought it would be because all candidates were so well qualified. They expressed appreciation for the interest shown by each applicant.

After the appointment Board President Ken Larson said, “Mr. Gallo is a great supporter of education in San Bernardino and Area D. We as a board look forward to working with him to further the needs of the students and the staff that we serve.”Gallo fills the unexpired term vacated by Hardy Brown II, who resigned August 2. Just over one year remains in his unexpired term. Gallo will officially assume his seat when he takes the oath of office at the beginning of the next regular County Board meeting on October 4.
