Redlands resident, Don Schroeder, has walked every street in Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, Highland, Calimesa, and has just recently added Grand Terrace to that list. Schroeder has lived in Redlands since 1979 and has always enjoyed walking. Although he would go on walks before his retirement, it wasn’t until after that walking became more important. After retiring, Schroeder began to walk a lot more. He wanted to do something to stay active and healthy. He shares, “I’m not a biker, or a runner, but I have always enjoyed walking.” He recalls long-time friends, Nelda and Mote Stuck, who have walked the entire city of Redlands. “They gave me the idea to walk the city; they were my inspiration.” Schroeder went to them and asked them what they did exactly and how they did it. This is what sparked his desire, and got him to start walking even more. About two years ago, he accomplished his goal by walking every street in the city of Redlands, which took him about a year, walking an hour and fifteen minutes three to four days per week. However, he wasn’t going to stop there; he wanted to walk through more cities. It didn’t necessarily matter where to him, he just wanted to walk. Throughout every city and every route, “I make a point to try to look at everything I walk pass,” he said. He started to walk Yucaipa, which took him about seven to eight months, while Calimesa took him about six to seven weeks. Loma Linda took him about three months, and the most recent route, Grand Terrace, took him about six to seven weeks. He has also walked the entire city of Highland and some parts of Colton and San Bernardino. Schroeder starts his morning walks at 7:30 a.m., beginning by driving to a specific spot, getting out his map, planning a route, and walking that route. During each walking session, he covers about four to five miles. “Fifteen to twenty miles a week isn’t that bad,” he shares while laughing. He passes through all types of areas whether they are industrial or residential and shares that he doesn’t necessarily have a favorite type of route, he just loves to look at his surroundings; “I am always on the look out,” he shares. Grand Terrace, the most recent city on his agenda, is a lot smaller than other cities that he has walked before. Don mentions that it is an older city but “well kept up” and shares that he really enjoys walking through Grand Terrace; “it’s a unique city.”
