Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) proudly announces the Second Annual MVUSD Reading Festival to be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Moreno Valley Mall. This year's theme: Journey through Reading – Imagine the Possibilities! The goal of this festival is to highlight the importance of promoting reading success by Grade 3 through the support of our teachers, schools, and community partners. A Kids Count Special Report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation states that children who read on grade level by the end of third grade are more successful in school, work, and life (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2010). With this research in mind, every third grade student(2,600 children) in the MVUSD will receive recognition on the main stage at the mall. Each child will receive a new book and a certificate. Each school site has been given a time slot for students to attend and be recognized with the certificates and books. Students will need to attend the event with an adult as there will be no student supervision. Also, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be many activities available for students to celebrate reading success including: 1) Activity Booths (i.e. crafts, giveaways, etc.) 2) Entertainment (i.e. student music, etc.) 3) Raffle (i.e. gift cards, etc.) 4) and an opportunity for our third grade students to read to “Guest Listeners” Over 200 volunteers have already committed to donating or attending this event. The District hopes everyone will drop by and join in on the fun while showing support for literacy. For further information, please contact the MVUSD, Nancy Kadolph, Secretary - Elementary Education Department at (951) 571-7500, extension 17275, or by e-mail at nkadolph@mvusd.net.
