Vineyard Church Serves its Community

Recently Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church in Colton welcomed and fed those in need in a full-scale welcome lunch event. Beginning in 2000 as an opportunity to serve community members in need of a hot lunch in the park, the annual event has grown to become a welcome event at the church, located at 785 Colton Avenue, where lunch, clothing and food bags are provided to the needy and the homeless in the Colton Avenue and Chavez Park neigborhood. Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church Pastor Pete Tasaka said, “Most people come from the area around the church, but others come in from the park across the street.” At the April 26 event, which also saw volunteer efforts from Councilmember Dr. Luis Gonzalez, served about 100 people, Tasaka estimated. According to Debbie Tasaka, his wife, the community lunch is regularly planned for the last Sunday of each month in order to “help people get though the last part of the month when finances are low.” Church member Steven La Porta, who was sitting amongst the visitors and spending time talking to them about their needs, future plans and their salvation, said, "I really like to reach out to people. The love of God is real." The open lunch runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall.
