Redlands Fire Department crews extricated a 45-year-old Yucaipa man after his vehicle went over the side of the road and rolled over into a canyon Tuesday evening. Redlands Fire and Police departments responded to the traffic collision at the intersection of Elder way and East Sunset Drive South at 7:17 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15. The vehicle, a Chevrolet pickup, went over an embankment and came to rest in a canyon about 200 feet below the roadway. Firefighters found the victim trapped under the vehicle, with part of the vehicle resting on his neck. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and raised it enough to free the victim. Firefighters, police officers, and personnel from AMR assisted with hoisting the victim and rescuers out of the canyon. Rope rescues require more personnel than an average Fire rescue response, and due to other incidents initial responders needed the assistance of additional personnel. The driver was transported to Loma Linda University Medical for further evaluation and treatment. Firefighters and police officers remained on scene for several hours to provide logistical support for the removal of the vehicle from the canyon.
