Downed Power Lines Precautions

REDLANDS>> On Tuesday, April 11 firefighters responded to a fire in which downed power lines were discovered at the scene. As per the Southern California Edison website, residents who come across downed power lines are advised to take the following steps to keep safe: SoCal Edison urges residents to stay away from loose or fallen power lines. "Neither approach nor touch any person or object who has come into contact with the wire, as this can lead to electrocution and in some cases, death," the website states. If a downed wire is near or in water, be careful not to step in the water, as water conducts electricity. Residents should be mindful of power lines that reach overhead. Those who work in trees or at other jobs that require being lifted into the air should be especially careful that they do not come into contact with power lines. Children should also be advised about climbing to the tops of trees that happen to be near power lines. Before embarking on any projects that require digging, dial 811. This service will allow you to mark your digging lines and is free. This is important in preventing neighborhood power outages and service disruptions. Lastly, the SoCal Edison website advises residents to never release metallic balloons outside, as they have a tendency to come into contact with wires and cause electrical shortages. It is also advised that if you come across a balloon, kite, or other object that is entangled in wires, do not attempt to retrieve it.
