Friday Afternoon Movies

On a warm Friday afternoon July 11, the Joslyn Senior Center in Redlands prepared to beat the heat with their weekly Friday Afternoon Movie. Every Friday at 2 p.m., The Joslyn Senior Center in Redlands offers movie and popcorn for all who wish to come and enjoy. Program Aide Steve Humbert chose the movie, “The Short Game". “It’s hard to find a movie that both women and men can enjoy; the men usually want to watch action movies and the women like romance and things like that. So I try to find movies in between that everyone could enjoy.” Friday’s movie, “The Short Game” was about seven and eight year old kids competing in the world champion golf tournaments with hopes of not only becoming world champion golfers, but also future professional golfers. “I think it’s nice, it’s a good little program. It gets us out of the heat and we get to enjoy a movie and even get a little popcorn,” said Eddie E. who is a local homeless senior who attends the Friday afternoon movies with his friends. Seventy-year-old Loma Linda resident, Stella, brought her grandkids Heather and Christopher along to enjoy the movie, “I’ve come a few times before and kind of stopped coming, but we’re starting to come again, it’s too hot to be outdoors,” she said, “it’s great, I really enjoy it.” “I was surprised to see a full crowd watching movies. Sometimes you have a couple people and other times a few more, I think if you have good movies, people will come,” Mel Shea, 82, of Redlands said. Shea, who teaches craft class at the center, met her husband, Bob, 79, also of Redlands, at a Joslyn Center singles group. She had retired at the age of seventy, “I retired and you stay home for a while then you kind of get tired of being at home,” she said. She decided then to join some of the activities at the center. The director at the time urged her to join a singles group. It was there that she met Bob, who was also urged by the director to join. “We went to the first meeting and at that time they were having a dance. We met there and both of us liked to dance, so we hit it off,” she said. “We both like to travel and go to the movies and shows, stuff like that. We were both looking for someone to do that with." The two met February 2002 and married in March of the next year. They are both actively involved in the center and attend regularly, together. “I liked the movie, I saw one of the players I knew when I was young,” Bob said.
