Replacing Weatherstripping to Save Energy

Drafty doors and windows can make your home less comfortable and raise your energy bills. One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve efficiency is by replacing worn-out weatherstripping. This simple project takes just a few hours and can make a noticeable difference in how your home retains heat in winter and stays cool in summer.

Preparation

Before you begin, inspect all exterior doors and windows to identify areas where air leaks are occurring. You can do this by holding a candle or incense stick near the edges of a closed door or window—if the flame flickers, air is escaping.

Next, gather your materials. You’ll need new weatherstripping, scissors, a tape measure, a putty knife, and cleaning supplies. There are several types of weatherstripping to choose from:

• Foam tape – flexible and easy to install on window sashes and door frames.

• V-strip or tension seal – ideal for sliding windows and double-hung windows.

• Rubber or silicone gaskets – durable options for door bottoms and thresholds.

Be sure to select a material that matches your specific needs and climate.

Steps

1. Remove the old weatherstripping.

Carefully peel away the existing material. If it’s stubborn, use a putty knife to lift it from the surface. Remove any leftover adhesive or staples, then wipe the area clean with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Allow the surface to dry completely before installing new weatherstripping.

2. Measure and cut the new strips.

Measure each section twice before cutting to ensure accuracy. It’s better to cut slightly longer pieces that can be trimmed later for a snug fit.

3. Install the new weatherstripping.

For adhesive-backed foam or V-strip, start at one corner and press the material firmly along the edge, ensuring it creates a consistent seal. Avoid stretching the strip—it should compress slightly when the door or window closes but not create resistance.

For door bottoms or thresholds, install a new door sweep or gasket. Use screws to secure it in place and check that the door closes smoothly without dragging.

4. Test the seal.

Close the door or window to test for drafts. You should feel no air movement but still be able to open and close it easily. Adjust as needed for a proper fit.

Maintenance and Safety

Weatherstripping naturally wears down over time, especially in high-traffic areas. Inspect it at least twice a year—once before winter and again before summer. Replace any sections that appear cracked, compressed, or peeling.

To prolong its lifespan, keep door frames and window tracks clean and dry. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can weaken adhesive or rubber materials.

Always use caution when working with cutting tools, and dispose of old weatherstripping properly.

Replacing weatherstripping is a small project that can have a big impact on your home’s comfort and energy savings. With just a few simple tools and an afternoon of work, you can reduce drafts, lower utility costs, and make your living space more efficient year-round.
