A herd of wild donkeys, primarily mother donkeys and their offspring, have been given a chance for a better life since being relocated from Redlands to DonkeyLand.
The move to the rescue comes after several donkeys from the herd were hit and killed by a train in San Timoteo Canyon in November. In the past year, there have been significantly more deaths and injuries to donkeys than in previous years, according to Chad Cheatham, vice president of DonkeyLand.
DonkeyLand, founded 10 years ago with the goal of saving wild burros and their habitats, is a nearly 2,000-acre rescue, sanctuary, and wildlife preserve.
“Over-population, loss of habitat, people feeding the burros have led to many donkeys being injured and killed by cars and trains,” said Cheatham.
This month, through a partnership with San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control and the Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF), the herd was successfully moved to the Reche Canyon rescue site.
Along with assisting in the relocation of the wild burros who are in danger, San Bernardino County and ARFF will facilitate the next phase of a Humane Wild Burro Sterilization Project. This is a collaborative effort between the County, ARFF, DonkeyLand, local veterinarians, and other non-profit organizations to help protect the wild burros. The partnership includes the D. J. & T. Foundation, which was founded by former game show host Bob Barker from the Price is Right, according to Brian Cronin, chief of San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control.
