Kirk McVey, membership director of the Grand Terrace Lion’s Club and Steve Barton, chairman of the scholarship committee awarded the recipients with a scholarships that equaled to the amount $1,000. Brandyn Alvarez, a graduate from Grand Terrace High school, received a $200 scholarship. At the meeting, McVey said Brandon will attend the University of Redlands to play football and major in mathematics. Alvarez said he hopes to become a high school teacher. "The scholarship to me represents more than just money," Alvarez said. "It represents hard work and a burden lifted off my shoulders. The scholarship will be a tremendous help in assisting me with the cost of college. The Lion's Club will be part of the reason I walk across the stage in four years with a degree in my hand from the University of Redlands. I am forever thankful for the wonderful people that were willing to assist me in making my dreams become reality." Brian Duncan, a graduate from Grand Terrace High School and former member of the GTHS Leo’s Club, received a $300 scholarship. Duncan said he will attend Riverside Community College to major in computer informatics and will also join the AFROTC. "Winning the Lion's scholarship means so much to me as I was a member and officer of the Leo's Club all four of my high school years," Duncan said. "Funds are tough for a kid like me and this scholarship is a great stepping stone for my future that I will not take lightly." Denise Kidd, a graduate from Grand Terrace High School and former president of the GTHS Leo’s Club, received a $500 scholarship.
