Army Veteran Santos Salas was recently honored with his very own Military Banner Installation Ceremony on Aug. 12. “He has been wanting one for so long now…he’s just so proud of it,” Salas’ wife Yolanda shared. Salas was drafted into the Army in 1967 and served until 1968. He was a part of the 629 Artillery and 105 Housers; many of his instrumental duties involved being an Amo Handler. “He really enjoyed his service and very proud to have served. He talks about it greatly and takes out pictures every once in a while to reminisce,” Yolanda added. He grew up in the San Bernardino area and attended Pacific High School. However, Salas and his wife Yolanda bought a house in Colton and have lived there most of their lives. “The hanging of his banner was well-deserved. He has wanted one for a while and when the day of his installation ceremony came, it made him so proud,” Yolanda said. The Salas family also ordered a military banner for them to keep. Salas is turning 70 on Nov. 1st and his family is throwing him a party with all of his fellow veterans. “We’re going to hang his banner up in the banquet hall at his birthday party…it’s a really good memory to keep,” she added. Salas is very much involved in the San Bernardino/Colton Veteran Center and has made many friends by attending all of their meetings and various events. Yolanda explained, “It’s such a good place; they really help veterans there.” Many of his friends and family members attended his military banner installation ceremony to support such a proud moment in his life. Yolanda shared, “It was a great turn out. We all went to Shakey’s Pizza afterward and made a whole day out of it.” She added, “We are all so proud of him and happy that he got his banner.”
