Hockey Sticks Signed by 2014 Olympians Raise $24,000 for Loma Linda University Cancer Center

The Winter Olympics in Sochi have come to an end, but the game of hockey carries on. Seven members of the Anaheim Ducks participated in the 2014 Olympic games on the hockey teams of five countries. In an effort to raise funds and awareness for Loma Linda University Cancer Center (LLUCC), the Anaheim Ducks sold mini hockey sticks, each signed by an individual player who took part in the Olympic games, during the game on Sunday, March 2. “This was another opportunity for Loma Linda University Cancer Center to reach out to a broader audience about cancer awareness,” said Judy Chatigny, executive director for the Cancer Center, “We are overwhelmed at the response the commemorative hockey sticks received and are so appreciative to all the fans who participated in the fundraiser.” The Anaheim Ducks who played on an Olympic hockey team are Jonas Hiller, Switzerland; Jakob Silfverberg, Sweden; Cam Fowler, United States; Ryan Getzlaf, and Corey Perry, Canada; Teemu Selanne and Sami Vatanen, Finland. Seven hundred hockey sticks were available for purchase at the game, and by the first period they were sold out. Additional sticks were ordered and sold online in the days following the game. $24,000 was raised for the Cancer Center through the sale of the sticks. Chatigny continued, “Funds raised from the sale of the sticks will allow the Cancer Center to continue to provide the highest level of care to the patients who need it the most.” As part of their ongoing partnership with LLUCC, the Anaheim Ducks Power Players and mascot, Wild Wing, also visited with patients at the Cancer Center on Thursday, Feb 27. “As an organization, we’ve made community involvement a top priority, and creative fundraising programs such as this are a great way to get our fans involved in those efforts,” said Tim Ryan, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Anaheim Ducks. “In addition, we’re happy our mascot and team representatives were able to brighten the day for so many patients, and we’ll continue to work with Loma Linda on programs that support those in need.”
