The Kappa Delta Sorority at California State University, San Bernardino will host its Shamrock 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, March 8, from 8 a.m.-noon to bring attention to, and to help prevent, child abuse. The Shamrock 5K Run/Walk will start from the CSUSB front lawn. Eighty percent of the proceeds will benefit ChildHelp facility in Beaumont. The remaining 20 percent will go to Prevent Child Abuse America, Kappa Delta’s national philanthropy, for nationwide public awareness programs. The CSUSB sorority has a goal of raising $25,000. "Shamrock is a fun way to get the community to work as a unit toward raising money and awareness for the prevention of child abuse,” said Isabel Manookian, the sorority’s vice president of community service. "We look forward to hosting our fourth annual Shamrock 5k Run/Walk and reaching beyond the $20,000 raised last year to help our local Child Help Facility and Prevent Child Abuse America." According to recent Prevent Child Abuse America statistics, the number of children abused or neglected in the United States grew by 33 percent to reach a level of 3,244,000 in the last decade. Confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect were estimated at more than one million in 1999. Three children each day die from abuse or neglect in the United States. Registration for the Shamrock 5k Run/Walk is $33 for CSUSB students and faculty; $38 regular; $45 for late registration; and $150 for a five member team. Check in/ late registration is at 7 a.m. and the 5k will begin at 8 a.m. Registration can also be done online at the event website at https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/SanBernardino/KappaDeltaShamrock5K. Founded in 1897, Kappa Delta Sorority began supporting Prevent Child Abuse America in 1981, and began the nationwide Shamrock Event in 1983. More than $6 million has been raised through these events to benefit child abuse prevention efforts across the country.
