Seventy-five students at each of the six middle schools – 25 teams of three – took part in the recent semifinals of Moreno Valley Math League competitions. They were vying to be one of their schools’ top five teams and move on to the Math League finals on June 4. Team members are “mathemagicians” from grades 6, 7 and 8, and the semifinal competitions consisted of five rounds. The complexity of the questions in different rounds of the MVML was increased to address the different domains of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Math problems were also timed to support fast, accurate math skills. The top five teams from each school will now receive intense training to develop the students’ application of knowledge and their higher-order skills. Math League happens through the efforts of 13 teachers: Heiva Cummings, Pamela Alvarado, Stephanie Ferguson, Janet Hernandez, Nicholas Smith, Camille Bates, Jennifer Smith, Martha Krauss, Francisco Basantes, James Nakatani, Alexandra Jones, HongAn Crump, Julie Kim and Deepika Srivastava, MVML Coordinators, along with Maribel Mattox, Director of Secondary Education. “Math League has been instrumental in elevating higher-level thinking skills for our middle school students,” said Asst. Supt. Dr. Martinrex Kedziora. “We’re thrilled about their engagement in learning. The students who participate in this program bring a sense of energy and enthusiasm to mathematics at their schools, and we find them to be much more prepared for the rigors of high school.”
