On. Jan. 15 the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees honored one of their own. Board Vice President Dr. Kathleen "Katy" Henry was presented with a certification of completion of the Excellence in Trusteeship program offered by the Community College League of California during the board's regular meeting that day. She is the first SBCCD trustee to complete the program, which aims to address issues unique to California community colleges. "The program provides a solid foundation for being an effective board member, and for learning the specifics necessary for leadership in seven broad areas of competency, including accreditation, student access, ethics and the Brown Act," said Henry. "The training provides trustees with tools that help keep the Board focused on student learning." SBCCD Chancellor Bruce Baron said Henry's accomplishment "demonstrates her ongoing commitment to the importance of establishing policies to assure the quality, integrity and effectiveness of the student learning programs and services, the financial stability of the institution." Dr. Henry was elected to the SBCCD Board of Trustees in 2012 and is now serving her second term as the board's vice president. Dr. Henry is a university instructor who started her educational pursuits at the community college level, earning a bachelor's degree at Southern Illinois University in workforce education and development and a master's degree in organizational development. Henry earned her Ph.D. in human and organizational systems from the Fielding Institute. Additionally, Henry serves on the board of directors for the Habitat for Humanity of San Bernardino, is a chairperson with the Highland Woman's Club's Scholarship Committee, is a member and past chairperson of Youth Services and K-Kids in the Highland Kiwanis Club, is a member of the Economic Development & Corporate Training Foundation, a member of the KVCR Foundation and serves as an ambassador with the Highland Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, SBCCD Trustee Gloria Macías Harrison, Board Clerk Joseph Williams and Trustee Nickolas Zoumbos are also enrolled in the professional development training. Chancellor Baron said, "It is the best interest of the SBCCD community that our Board of Trustees be as well informed as possible, and the CCLC is the best source of such information and training."
