Narrowing the Digital Divide with New Initiative

By City of Moreno Valley

10/06/2020 at 11:06 AM

The digital divide separates people -- rich or poor, young or old, employed or unemployed. But it doesn’t have to be that way. As part of the Mayor and City Council's initiative to provide digital inclusivity, Moreno Valley has created CLIC, which stands for Computer Learning & Internet Connectivity, to provide free internet access using the City’s WiFi hotspots, creation of WiFi Garden locations (free WiFi access at various City facilities), public-use computers, and a free, comprehensive virtual community portal filled with information to help build users' computer knowledge and skills. CLIC was launched Oct. 1.

"In 2020, internet access and computer proficiency should be as common and expected as water and power service," said Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez, Mayor of Moreno Valley. "Just as the whole community benefits from everyone having access to basic utilities, we believe we all benefit when all residents can make use of 21st century technology."

The new CLIC portal, located on the City of Moreno Valley website at www.moval.org/clic, provides helpful information about free and low-cost ways of getting a computer and accessing the internet, and a wealth of free resources to help users take advantage of their internet access to enhance learning, seek employment, manage their finances, do business, and even have some fun online. The CLIC portal is available in English and Spanish.
