City Prepares for Rainy Season

As anticipation builds for an unusually rainy year, city officials are gearing up for the wet season by conducting comprehensive maintenance on storm drains. This proactive approach is aimed at preventing flooding, water accumulation, and the potential hazards that could come with heavy rainfall.

During a recent discussion, city representatives outlined the scope of their efforts to ensure the storm drains are in prime condition. This includes cleaning out catch basins and removing obstructions like trash, branches, and debris. These steps are critical to ensuring that water can flow freely and safely through the drainage system.

One key aspect of the storm drain maintenance initiative involves the cleaning of "ribbon basins" located at the base of a hill on city-owned property. These basins are designed to control water runoff from the hill, preventing it from causing damage to properties located downstream. By clearing away any brush or debris in these areas, the city hopes to maintain the efficient flow of water.

The discussion also shed light on the importance of storm drains in different areas of the city. For instance, homes situated on the east side of Observation Street, near the hill, rely on a particular storm drain to divert water away from their properties. This is crucial for preventing water damage and erosion, particularly during heavy rains.

City officials emphasized their commitment to conducting thorough maintenance throughout the city. In addition to cleaning catch basins, attention will be given to areas where water flows into and out of storm drains, including places like Mount Vernon where streets intersect with the drainage system. Ensuring that curbs and gutters are in good condition and that no trash or potholes obstruct the flow of water is a top priority.

The ultimate goal of these efforts is to allow water to flow smoothly down the city's east-west streets, safely reaching the bottom of the hill and draining toward the freeway. This will not only prevent flooding and water accumulation but also reduce the risk of damage to properties and infrastructure.

The storm drain maintenance is a preventative measure aimed at safeguarding residents and the city's infrastructure from potential rain-related problems. Officials hope to complete these efforts by the middle of January to ensure the city is well-prepared for the upcoming rainy season. Given that the typical winter weather in the area often extends into March and April, early maintenance is essential.

Residents with concerns about the storm drain maintenance can contact City Hall for more information. While an exact contact number was not provided during the discussion, residents are encouraged to reach out to city officials for updates and assistance.

City representatives assured residents that they are committed to ensuring the storm drains are in top shape and that the city is well-prepared for the rainy season ahead. By conducting maintenance and cleaning operations in advance, they aim to mitigate potential issues and protect the community from water-related problems.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.

Photo Caption: Crime in San Bernardino has dropped by 30 percent or more throughout the city. One reason is that there are more officers on the streets. The Police Department’s goal is to have 350 sworn officers. Current full-time staffing is reported at 295 sworn officers and 156 professional staff.
