Colton City Council Recognizes Native American Day With Proclamation
09/26/2023 at 12:17 PM

At the September 5 meeting, the Colton City Council recognized Native American Day with a proclamation presented to Mr. Jack Lugo, a field representative of Assembly Member James Ramos, and a member of the Morongo tribe.

With this proclamation, the City of Colton recognizes the importance of acknowledging and honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of California Native Americans. More importantly, this recognition offers a chance to educate the community about Native American cultures that have played an important part in the development of our city, our region and our state.

While different tribe groups have established a legacy of contributions to specific areas, the over all impact to our collective culture continues to be primary source of indigenous traditions that we can all appreciate and uphold.

California Native Americans communities have made significant contributions to the growth, development , and progress in the City of Colton through their rich traditions, art, language, medicine, environmental stewardship, and more. As such, several communities have been influential in this immediate area alone. By looking into local historical records, some of the most predominate Native American communities who have been an integral part of Colton history, were the Guachama, Serrano, Cahuilla, and Gabrielino tribes.

Mr. Lugo attended the council meeting on behalf of Assembly Member James Ramos, who himself is a native American and a member of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. “This proclamation is very much appreciated,” said Lugo at the meeting, who continued, “Its important to know that the City of Colton recognizes the contributions of Native Americans to the community.”

We are indeed fortunate to have such a diverse community and are honored to recognize Native American Day as a way to promote, foster, and to officially show the city’s appreciation for the role our Native American communities have had in the cultural shaping of the City of Colton and surrounding region.
