San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools is pleased to announce four middle schools in San Bernardino County have been re-designated as 2022 “California Schools to Watch.”
“These schools demonstrate excellence, social equity and responsiveness to keep students engaged and learning,” said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. “I commend the extraordinary work being done at schools within our county to not only earn this designation in the past but to have retained this honor while continuing to support the needs of all students.”
The four middle schools in San Bernardino County that have been re-designated as 2022 California Schools to Watch are:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, San Bernardino City Unified School District
Serrano Middle School (Highland), San Bernardino City Unified School District
Southridge Tech Middle School, Fontana Unified School District
Wayne Ruble Middle School, Fontana Unified School District
“This is an incredible honor that shows how these middle schools are supporting students through educational innovation and a dedicated school community,” said San Bernardino County Board of Education President Ken Larson. “I am incredibly proud to see our schools spotlighted within the county.”
These four high-performing middle schools are among 31 schools that have reapplied to the program, demonstrated their sustained progress and have been re-designated as 2022 “California Schools to Watch.”
Another 16 California middle schools have been newly recognized by the California Schools to Watch program.
“Congratulations to both Southridge Tech and Wayne Ruble Middle School communities on their continued excellence and re-designation as a 2022 California School to Watch,” Fontana Unified Superintendent Randal S. Bassett said. “This recognition highlights the commitment by our Fontana Unified teachers and staff to provide the best learning environment to our students, and we could not be more proud of their hard work.”
Schools must complete an extensive application and host a site visit in order to earn this designation. To retain the designation, each school is re-evaluated every three years.
“I’m proud of King and Serrano Middle Schools for being re-designated as Schools to Watch,” San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent Doc Ervin said. “These schools are being recognized as model campuses for engaging and motivating students to learn and helping to close the achievement gap. That is especially impressive during the ongoing COVID crisis.”
The 2022 schools will be recognized by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond during the School to Watch Leadership Celebration Day on Thursday, March 3.
The California Schools to Watch program is sponsored by the California Department of Education, the California League of Schools and the California Middle Grades Alliance, in association with the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform.
