CyberPatriot XIV Competition

By Riverside County Office of Education

01/25/2022 at 04:18 PM

Designed by RCOE's Career Technical Education (CTE) team, the Cyber Academic Pathway program at the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) is currently available to students at five middle schools and two high schools. This CTE program meets the University of California A-G requirements, and has become a leading example in the State for youth cyber education.

In November 2021, four MVUSD CTE Cyber students accepted an invitation to present to industry professionals at the California IT In Education Conference. The student panelists, like many of the Pathway graduates before them, plan to continue their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education beyond high school. And with the ability to take dual enrollment courses, plus increasing local scholarship opportunities spurred on by the program's success, these students will be well prepared for careers in STEM.

Many of the Cyber Academic Pathway students are also formidable competitors in the annual CyberPatriot competition. The Air Force Association's CyberPatriot Program was created to inspire K-12 students to pursue careers in cybersecurity or other STEM fields. Over 5,000 high school and middle school teams across the country took part in this year's CyberPatriot XIV that began in October 2021, including 15 Riverside County school teams. Four Cyber teams from Canyon Springs High School (CSHS) advanced to compete at the State level in December, and two of those teams are now headed to the CyberPatriot XIV Semifinals beginning January 21st.

In the State Round, the "All-Girl" team from CSHS finished 21st in California, 82nd Nationally in the Silver Division; and the CSHS AFROTC team finished 1st in Air Force California and 8th overall Air Force Nationally in the Gold Division. It is a huge victory for these Cyber teams to have made it this far and we will be rooting for them as they move forward in the world's largest cyber security competition.
