Luque Community Center's Wreath of Flowers

The Luque Community Center's 50+ Club gathered last Friday to craft beautiful wreaths of flowers. The event was called "Wreath of Flowers," and the club made small wreaths by sticking assorted artificial flowers through foam circles, which they took home to decorate their homes. The event was put on by the hard workers at Luque's Community Center who helped with the citizens by cutting the flowers and gluing when needed. Many senior citizens gathered at the center today, one of them being Joann Rojas who shared, "I love my center every day." Rojas has been going to the center for over a year. She first came with her daughter, and enthusiastically added, "I've been coming here ever since." Rojas, like other members of the club, loves to do crafts, and also "love[s] the activities at this center." The center's Recreational Specialist, Crystal Alcantar, stated "personally, I really enjoy being here with them. It's like your family away from home." Each of the employees and volunteers of the Luque Community Center gave a personal greeting to each member of the club as they entered, and while they worked on the crafts, the employees and volunteers made sure each local received periodic one-on-one assistance. According to Alcantar, the activities are put on for the seniors because "it's something to keep their minds active and hands going," and the Wreath of Flowers was only one of the many activities the center puts on. On Mondays at 10:30 a.m. there's Movie Magic, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. are Creative Crafters days, Wednesdays and Fridays are Bingo days at 12:15 p.m., and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. are Wii Fitness and more. Aside from the crafts and activities put on by Luque Community Center, the senior citizens are also provided with a Senior Cuisine for only $2.50 every Monday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Rachel Avila, another Luque Community Center regular, stated "I come here because they have good food." Every week the senior citizens of Colton gather to get out of the heat and meet with friends to do crafts and other activities. The Luque Community Center is open for their 50+ Club year round from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
