On Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24, the American Diabetes Association partnered with Dignity Health Southern California to offer a free family camp to educate children and their families about the importance of healthy living to prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Over 50 families came together at the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino for an educational and activity-filled environment focused on creating healthy behaviors around nutrition and physical activity. Campers, ranging in age from seven to 15 years old, interacted with each other, while their parents were given the opportunity to engage with trained staff to learn about lifestyle changes for the whole family.
Dr. Margo Young, Director of Community Health for Community Hospital of San Bernardino and St. Bernardine Medical Center, has partnered with the American Diabetes Association on multiple occasions and feels strongly that providing the right education at a young age, while including the whole family, will have the greatest impact on a healthy lifestyle and future for the children of the Inland Empire.
In addition to the weekend-long camp experience, all children and their families are invited to attend three Reunion Events at the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino. These events will include additional educational and fun physical activity experiences for both parents and children, as well as the opportunity to connect with other families and friends made at camp.
