REDLANDS>> A full nighttime airfield closure at Redlands Municipal Airport began April 30 to allow for construction and installation of airport lighting and signage. The runway and taxiway will be closed and no aviation activity will be permitted between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m, Sundays through Thursdays. The airfield will be open Friday and Saturday evenings. The closure is expected to last through May 23.

Construction for the Redlands Municipal Airport Runway 8-26 Lighting and Signage Project began Tuesday, March 14. The project is expected to reach completion by June.

Funding from the FAA Airport Improvement Program, of $827,437, along with $41,371.85 in additional funding from the Caltrans Division of Aeronautics Aviation Grant will fund the rehabilitation of the electrical systems serving one runway and taxiway at the airport at 1755 Sessums Drive, in the northeast corner of the City. The City will provide matching funds of $50,565.59.

On Oct. 4, 2016, the City Council awarded a construction contract to RB Development of Big Bear City. Work will include replacement of existing taxiway lights and other electrical work, construction of new holding position signs along the runway and taxiway guidance signs, and replacement of runway edge and threshold lights. The runway and taxiway will be closed intermittently throughout the project, including full nighttime closures.

The project was designed by WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff and will be constructed by RB Development. Project management will be overseen by the City of Redlands Quality of Life Department in conjunction with the Municipal Utilities and Engineering Department. The City will make a concerted effort to minimize disruptions for airport patrons and residents in the surrounding area. The runway and taxiway will be closed during certain periods of construction, most of which will be done at night. A Notice to All Airmen was filed and will be amended as required to ensure accurate information is available to pilots.

Members of the aviation community and residents may direct questions to Will Hamilton, Senior Administrative Analyst for the Quality of Life Department, at whamilton@cityofredlands.org or by phone at 909-798-7655.
